The Pamir Highway, and the mountains it was built for
Tajikistan is the most mountainous country in Central Asia and the hardest to travel in — the Pamir Highway, the Wakhan corridor along the Afghan border, and the Fann Mountains within reach of Dushanbe. For travellers who want the road to be the point.
Quick facts
Ninety-three per cent of Tajikistan is mountain, and half of it is above 3,000 metres. That single fact decides everything about a trip here: the season is short, the roads are slow, and the reward is landscape at a scale that makes the rest of the region look domestic.
The Pamir Highway is the reason most people come — the second-highest road in the world, running from Osh in Kyrgyzstan down to Khorog and on to Dushanbe, over passes above 4,600 metres. The Wakhan corridor branches off it along the Panj river, with Afghanistan on the far bank close enough to see villages. Closer to Dushanbe, the Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul offer the same character in a week rather than two.
This is the least comfortable country in the region to travel in, and travellers who want it know that already. Guesthouses instead of hotels, long days in a 4x4, and altitude that has to be respected.
Highlights
Osh to Dushanbe over the Ak-Baital pass at 4,655 m. Days of high plateau, salt lakes and almost no one. The journey is the destination in the most literal sense.

Plan your visit
The Pamirs sit in the GBAO autonomous region, which needs a permit in addition to the e-visa. Both are arranged in advance. The high passes are realistically open July to September; outside that window the route is not a plan, it is a hope.
Several nights are spent above 3,500 m and passes exceed 4,600 m. Itineraries gain height gradually for a reason, and travellers with heart or lung conditions should raise it with us before booking, not after.
Family guesthouses and homestays for most of the Pamir route — clean, warm and hospitable, but shared facilities and no wifi. Dushanbe has ordinary hotels.
Bring what you need in cash. ATMs are unreliable outside Dushanbe and Khorog, and cards are of no use on the road.
This trip is a 4x4 expedition, not a tour with mountain views. Long driving days, basic guesthouses, real altitude. Travellers who want that find it the best thing they have done in Central Asia; travellers who wanted Uzbekistan with hills do not.
